Glasgow University Christian Union (GUCU) is a student led mission team which exists for one reason – to share the good news of the gospel to a generation without Jesus and without hope.

Supported by UCCF Staff Workers and working in partnership with the local church, we work as a team to reach out to students.

Any mission team needs time to prepare, train and pray together. This is done through the weekly Wednesday ‘Team Time’ meetings and the CU small groups. These meetings are central to our effectiveness and unity as a group. It enables us to refocus on God, to grow in our understanding of the good news of Jesus, and to apply the Bible to student life Glasgow.

GUCU is committed to the gospel

The gospel, or the good news about God’s interaction with humans (as summarised by our declaration of belief), forms the core conviction of our CU’s life and ministry. This incredible good news is the basis of our unity, the foundation of our ministry, the content of our message and the fuel for our evangelism.

GUCU is student led

GUCU student is led by a committee of nine students who, whilst still having plenty to learn (!), seek to coordinate the CU meetings and events throughout the year. There is plenty of room for everyone to get involved though; Christian Union really is for everyone (see the next point).

GUCU is inter-denominational

GUCU is made up of students ‘sent’ out from the local church. Believers drawn from many diverse church backgrounds, committed to working together in gospel unity whether they are charismatic, conservative, hairy etc.

It’s coming round (well, it is…) that time of year when new students flock in their thousands to the University of Glasgow. For these new students, it’s probably one of the biggest changes of their lives. A lot of them will be moving out of a home they’ve lived in for nearly 20 years, and starting up a new life among strangers. They’ll be excited, definitely, but probably a wee bit nervous too. Freshers’ week, then, is an excellent opportunity to share God’s love with folk, and to make them feel at home. For any prospective students reading this, seriously, Glasgow is awesome. You’ll love it.

But the whole host of events we have planned can’t be carried out unless we have the help of volunteers from CU to muck in. We’ll be helping freshers move in, putting out free drinks, holding a pub quiz, and even having a ceilidh. But we need your help.

If anyone at all wants to get involved, please contact Scott Hamilton (scotth89@hotmail.co.uk). We’ll be massively appreciative of any help we can get, even just giving out drinks. Don’t pass up this opportunity!

Events Timetable

At long last, the completed events table is up on the site. Feast your eyes on the wonders below, and mark them down in your diaries. The events in [brackets] are for people from CU who are helping out. Everything else is open to anyone! We look forward to seeing you there!

Being an international student must be terrifying. Exciting, definitely, but really scary. I mean, coming to Uni was tough enough, but to be hundreds, maybe thousands of miles away from home and to not know anyone is a completely different ball game!

That’s one of the reasons the Christian Union puts on events specifically for international students. Whether it’s a Ceilidh, Haggis Evening, or just a Film Night, these events give students an opportunity to get to know folk from the UK, and generally just have some Banter.

Every Wednesday we’re going to be getting together, to hang out, to make friends and to experience some casual Scottish culture. This is totally informal and open to all – international and not. Feel free to join us when it takes your fancy and maybe get involved in hosting one week!

If you are an international student and want to find out more, or are from the UK and want to help out, head on over to the International Banter Facebook page, or contact Laura Macdonnell, the Internationals Secretary (smiley_1213@hotmail.co.uk). Also, a handy survival guide for living in the UK can be found here!

Are you a New International Student, wanting to get involved in the Christian Union in Glasgow? If so please fill in this form and let us know you are coming as we would love to find you during International Orientation Week.

Whilst CU is a fantastic way of bringing Jesus to Glasgow Uni, it isn’t intended to replace church. A church family can help you grow in your faith more than CU ever could, and it provides the much needed support that will get you through university. So, to help you choose where to go, here are a list of the various churches in the area, and a brief summary of what they’re about, taken from their site and/or findachurch.co.uk. I would strongly recommend having a look at their individual sites, because a paragraph or so of information can never really do justice to the whole feel of a church! Whichever church you choose, though, you can be sure that you’ll be made welcome.

Dowanvale Free Church:

Our aim in Dowanvale is to proclaim the message given by God in the Bible so that people will come to know Jesus Christ themselves and be built up and strengthened in that knowledge. Because of the fundamental importance of God’s Word, primary place is given in worship to the reading and preaching of it. The congregation responds to these first by hearing and then by offering itself to God in the other acts of worship which are prayer, the singing of inspired songs and the giving of offerings. Whether you are just passing through or staying for longer, we warmly invite you to join with us in worship.

After the message we have a time where people are given an opportunity to respond and receive prayer. This is to make room for God to communicate to us by His Holy Spirit.

We recognise the importance of inviting people to come and join the family of God, and desire to be a community of believers being a force for change in every situation we find ourselves in. We offer a generous, non-judgemental welcome to everyone, and are a family that loves to do real life together, loving each other no matter what is going on. Our main ‘life group’ for students is called Formation. It meets mid-week and is a time of worship, teaching, honesty and fun. We also have hospitality lunches throughout September and October as well as at other times throughout the year.

We have other opportunities for investigating what Christians believe, and training and serving as a Christian in Christianity Explored, City-Wide Small Groups, Internationals events, and Release the Word, a new Bible training programme for students and young workers (Thursday evenings over food).

Event’s week is an opportunity to show Jesus to the campus through a series of, believe it or not, events. We’ll have lunch bars, a ceilidh, an acoustic night, dramas and more, and we really need your help. Bring friends along, help flyer, staff some events and, most importantly, pray. Our God has Glasgow Uni in the palm of his hand, despite how it may feel sometimes. He loves the students and lecturers on campus far more than we ever could, and he’s big enough to do something about it. We can completely trust in him.
