• Forum: Perhaps you’re more just intrigued about this whole Christianity thing, but still have far too many questions to make any sort of definite decision. In that case, Forum is for you. They cover a fair bit of ground, from “What if there is too much Suffering in the world for me to Believe in God?” to “What if we can have real Success?”, so sit back, relax, and enjoy.

An overview of the Glasgow University Christian Union year, 2011/2012. God’s hand has been obvious in the CU, and hopefully this video can help remind us of how much He’s done for us this year.

Psalm 78:4

The LORD, Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and us, is a God of wonders. His hand stretches through, in and over history, displaying His power by the ‘praiseworthy deeds’ He has done, working all things out for our good and His glory. We stand on the brink of history, the next sentence in a story that God has been writing since the beginning of time, waiting, with baited breath, to see what God will do through us. We are a new generation, but our God is the same glorious, holy and mighty God who created the world from nothing, who parted the Red Sea, who razed Jericho to the ground and raised Jesus to life. Whom shall we fear?

But that’s not all. It doesn’t end with us. It’s not even about us! Like links in an infinite chain, when we’re gone the story will live on, told through the lives of our brothers and sisters, a family God knows intimately but who aren’t even born yet. This river of God’s purpose has been flowing for thousands upon thousands of years, and we, in this blink of an eye that we call ‘life’, get a chance to swim in it.

Wow.

And yet so often we forget what’s gone before. So often we forget the praiseworthy deeds our God has done in the world, in the UK, in Glasgow and in our uni. Hundreds of students have walked where we walk, and worshipped where we worship, but so often we imagine our time at uni as isolated from what’s gone before.

But what if we remembered? What if we told of the wonders God has done in Glasgow Uni? What if his unwavering faithfulness, love and compassion for our campus gave us the confidence we needed to keep building his kingdom, and partner with him in the writing of the next chapter?

That’s the purpose of this blog: To be a record of all the stuff that kicks off in our uni, so future students can know how prayers were answered and lives were changed. Hopefully this post will be the start of a timeline of thankfulness, stretching forward to tell ‘the next generation’ about the incredible things God is working out in our university.

We hope you enjoy the ride. Be praying, and expect to be surprised.

Supported by UCCF Staff Workers and working in partnership with the local church, we work as a team to reach out to students.

Any mission team needs time to prepare, train and pray together. This is done through the weekly Wednesday ‘Team Time’ meetings and the CU small groups. These meetings are central to our effectiveness and unity as a group. It enables us to refocus on God, to grow in our understanding of the good news of Jesus, and to apply the Bible to student life Glasgow.

GUCU is committed to the gospel

The gospel, or the good news about God’s interaction with humans (as summarised by our declaration of belief), forms the core conviction of our CU’s life and ministry. This incredible good news is the basis of our unity, the foundation of our ministry, the content of our message and the fuel for our evangelism.

GUCU is student led

GUCU student is led by a committee of nine students who, whilst still having plenty to learn (!), seek to coordinate the CU meetings and events throughout the year. There is plenty of room for everyone to get involved though; Christian Union really is for everyone (see the next point).

GUCU is inter-denominational

GUCU is made up of students ‘sent’ out from the local church. Believers drawn from many diverse church backgrounds, committed to working together in gospel unity whether they are charismatic, conservative, hairy etc.

Being an international student must be terrifying. Exciting, definitely, but really scary. I mean, coming to Uni was tough enough, but to be hundreds, maybe thousands of miles away from home and to not know anyone is a completely different ball game!

That’s one of the reasons the Christian Union puts on events specifically for international students. Whether it’s a Ceilidh, Haggis Evening, or just a Film Night, these events give students an opportunity to get to know folk from the UK, and generally just have some Banter.

Every Wednesday we’re going to be getting together, to hang out, to  make friends and to experience some casual Scottish culture. This is totally informal and open to all – international and not. Feel free to join us when it takes your fancy and maybe get involved in hosting one week!

• Dowanvale Free Church:

Our aim in Dowanvale is to proclaim the message given by God in the Bible so that people will come to know Jesus Christ themselves and be built up and strengthened in that knowledge. Because of the fundamental importance of God’s Word, primary place is given in worship to the reading and preaching of it. The congregation responds to these first by hearing and then by offering itself to God in the other acts of worship which are prayer, the singing of inspired songs and the giving of offerings.
